Learn to Play
Boys and Girls Ages 9-12
(Please note: Ages are guidelines, not restrictions)
Primary Focus:
Continue to develop fundamental movement skills while beginning to develop fundamental golf skills.
Competition Level:
Focus on fun competition at the club, league or junior tour level. This stage is about progressing in skill and not specifically competition results. We will introduce games where winning is the goal but not at the expense of fun.
What Coach Kerry Recommends:
I believe that this age group represents the bulk of participants in after-school programs. It’s this time when most kids are involved in some kind of activity every day of the week. One of the most important things to remember at this age, is that juniors play from the correct length tees. The forward yardage markers at most courses are often too long for newer players. In this program, will be playing holes from 50 to 150 yards as their skills improve. I like to teach from the hole back to the tee. If your child only wants to hit drivers, this may not be the class for them.
Equipment:
Equipment remains a priority. Clubs should be selected based on height and not age. The weight of the club is as important as the length. We offer our participants the opportunity to purchase clubs at very reasonable pricing. We also have club rental options available. If your child does not have his or her own clubs we will have some available to use during class.
What Will We Be Doing In Class:
I will mix up the time between the practice green, the golf range and the course when available. I will use fun games to help teach golf skills. At this age grinding on boring practice drills on the range is neither exciting nor productive. Children at this age will develop their own interest and commitment levels to practicing to improve.
Athletic Skills:
Agility, footwork, dynamic balance, complex coordination, speed of coordination, strength, flexibility.
Technical Skills:
Continued progress in putting, chipping and full swing. Introduce bunker play, green reading and pitching.
Psychological Development:
Love of the sport, coach-ability, concentration, problem solving, confidence, good choices, fairness, responsibility.
FEES:
The enrollment fee for each player for this 6 session class is $180 and includes snacks and water during all classes and participant gifts.
